What is IVF (In vitro fertilization) with Sperm and Egg Donation?

Double donation involves treatment with both a donated egg and donated sperm. In this case, the child has no genetic connection to either parent. Double donation can be offered to couples who, for medical reasons, cannot use their own eggs or sperm, or to single women or same-sex female couples who need donated eggs. Double donation can also be an alternative when repeated IVF treatments have not resulted in pregnancy.

Who is it for?

Double donation can be successful when other methods have failed.

  • The method can be used for various types of infertility, including ovulation problems where the woman lacks or does not produce her own eggs due to early menopause or when diseases, previous surgeries, or chemotherapy treatments have damaged ovarian function, reduced sperm quality, and unexplained infertility.
  • The woman lacks or does not produce her own eggs.
  • The couple or woman is assessed to have a low chance of becoming pregnant with their own eggs and sperm.

Within the Livio group, we strive to maintain as consistent pricing as possible, but the varying conditions at different clinics may sometimes result in slight price differences from clinic to clinic. Possible Side Effects of IVF with Sperm and Egg Donation

It is important to remember that if the recipient is somewhat older (e.g., over 40), pregnancy always carries a higher risk than at younger ages. In pregnancies with donated eggs, there is also a slightly higher risk for the pregnant woman to develop high blood pressure and preeclampsia. These risks are carefully discussed during the medical consultation before treatment begins.

It should also be noted that the risk of numerical chromosomal abnormalities, which correlates with the age of the eggs used, can be significantly reduced through egg donation. A 40-year-old woman has a risk of about 1:100 for trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) with her own eggs, while the risk of trisomy 21 with donor eggs from 30-year-olds is reduced to the same level as for a 30-year-old (1:1000).

IVF with Sperm and Egg Donation Treatment Frequently Asked Questions

IVF with Sperm and Egg Donation FAQs
Why can't I choose the donor myself?

According to law, patients are not allowed to choose donor characteristics themselves; the doctor does this. The donor's eye color, hair color, skin color, and body type are matched with the woman who will carry the pregnancy. If it's a couple undergoing treatment together, the donor is matched with the future parent who will not be carrying the child during pregnancy. This way, the child is given the potential to resemble both parents.

How are donors evaluated?

All our donors are evaluated at Livio clinics through Livio Egg and Sperm Bank. All donors are healthy, have no hereditary diseases in their family/relatives, have a good egg reserve, and are between 23 and 35 years old. Prospective donors are tested for several infectious diseases (including HIV 1 and 2, hepatitis B and C, HTLV I/II, and syphilis), and genetic screening is done to ensure the donor is not a carrier of any rare hereditary diseases.

How many children can a donor give rise to?

A donor can give rise to children in a maximum of six families in Sweden, plus potential siblings.

Are the donors anonymous?

The donors are anonymous to the couple, and the couple is anonymous to the donors. However, children born through donation have the right, when sufficiently mature, to find out their donor or donors' identity. Donors have neither obligations nor rights towards the child. Information about donors is kept for at least 70 years.

Why must one undergo a psychosocial assessment?

The evaluation before donation treatment always includes a conversation with a behavioral scientist, where an in-depth psychosocial assessment is made and there's an opportunity to discuss the emotional aspect of undergoing egg donation where the child does not have a genetic connection to one or both parents. For most people, this is a good opportunity to raise questions, thoughts, and possible concerns about the treatment.
